BOMB UPDATE?

A question from Monsjoex in The Barracks: "Doc just finished 2 days of in game bomb investigation/testing." What needed tweaking?  What has changed?

It’s always been our contention here at CRS that a large high explosive bomb in the order of 500 pounds or more should, if it gets a direct hit on a tank of virtually any size, cause said tank to cease to be a functioning vehicle to any degree really. We did some dedicated testing during the v1.31 beta development and found that while this *is* possible with such bombs, against the heavier tanks the large bombs weren’t as reliable as we think they should be. So we looked at several aspects of how they work in the game engine and made some small alterations that give pretty consistent results against the heavier tanks.

This change only affects the results from direct hits.

Without deformation of the terrain mesh being possible, near misses are still only going to offer you the opportunity to track tanks and AFV’s, or remove their wheels if they are not tracked vehicles such as the armoured cars for example, but a direct hit will pretty much kill any ground vehicle it lands on now whereas in the current game some of the heavier tanks get away a little too often. Sometimes they burn, sometimes they blow up, sometimes they just smoke like crazy but they will be more reliably killed by the biggest bombs in the game from a direct hit than they are now. This should create a better option out of “calling in an air strike” against those tanks on the ridge that you can’t seem to deal with by any other means despite all your efforts, and how teamwork can play out between branches of your armed forces in the game.

Interestingly, as a side note: in infantry testing a large bomb landing 50m away can kill standing infantry fairly easily and even the smallest bombs (40 pounders) can manage this at 20m (these tests were conducted in open fields not employing any cover) so I think we can put to bed the “bombs don’t kill infantry unless you hit right next to them” question we see all the time. If you are prone however, your chance of survival is much greater, and this applies to all exploding devices like grenades and HE rounds from tanks. This is actually supported by real world blast effect against infantry profile testing.

What about say Infantry not being killed if you drop the bomb from too high, any work being done in that direction?

Awesome post though.

I don't think it'll be quite like you're imagining. You shall see soon enough :)

Why's deformable terrain needed for near misses? I thought tanks die from the fire and shock wave and crap, not formation of craters under them.

Will 40 lb bombs kill tanks with direct hits? Could they in real life?
