WHY ARE PISTOLS SO INACCURATE?

A questions from Irelandeb in The Barracks: "Why are pistols so inaccurate? They are ridiculous innacurate, they have way more dispersion than in real life. The bullet literally never hits where you are aiming outside point blank range. Why is this?"

DOC: Every now and then you hear this kind of thing bubble up from the barracks but in reality (and I say this as a one time real life marksman who can still shoot ok even today) it is possible to achieve results at 20m in game that are not out of line with what a really good pistol shooter would get in real life. Most pistol shooters never use ranges greater than 25m for determining accuracy with a pistol. Here are some screenshots of 20m results with each of the pistols in Battleground Europe, firing a full clip which is 6 for the Webley (British) and 8 shots for both the French Mle.1935A and the German Luger. Interestingly note that in the Webley test I was fortunate enough to get 2 rounds into 1 hole at target center. I can only do that very occasionally in real life at 20m. LOL

It was my last clip and when all rounds are fired the game automatically reverts back to the weapon with ammo remaining, in this case the MP40. Wise guy :) LOL

DOC, how big are those targets? I did a LOT of testing offline today, prone, rested, standing, 1/2 stamina, etc. My results were pretty good I think, but would like to know the diameter of the targets. Thx.

[The targets are 1.3 meters square - MM]

The targets are 1.3 meters square? And the shots were fired from 20 meters away?
We must have some serious depth perception problems in this game.

The screenshots were taken from much closer than 20 meters away (like maybe 2m) so you could see the pattern better. The SHOOTING was done at 20 meters.

I've actually never had trouble with pistol accuracy, I find it relatively reliable at distances you would consider using a pistol. Nice demonstration though!

People used to video games where pistols are somehow more accurate than rifles because they're single shot or something. In reality they're not accurate. They'll WORK, sure, but honestly, if you have the choice, go with your primary weapon.

PPL-think about how many videos or news reports stating how many shots were fired by cops & bad guys, how many times no one gets hit, or 27 shots fired one person shot w/ 1 round, etc. WWIIOL simulates real life, NOT other easy mode hit bubble games.

For what I have seen th're actually very accurate if you aim the iron sight and if you dont move. If you dont aim at your sight its true that they really suck especially moving I have seen bullets hittin near my foot while they point at the target

Yeah I've always figured pistol accuracy in this game is about right. Red Orchestra by comparison really nerfs them and it's ridiculous.

I always knew the Webley sucked. Might as well call it the Wobbly.

For a .455 caliber revolver it's actually pretty good. Bet you couldn't do as well as that test with a real one at 20 yards :) NOTE: two of those center shots went in one hole!

That's the biggest luger I have ever seen! Where can I get one? Your's looks like it's almost as big as an MP40....

About the cops in shootouts firing so many shots, it's like that because it's mainly suppressive fire not well aimed shots at eachother

Weird, I was thinking that all the pistols in game had laser targeting because they are nicely accurate.

I guess it is about right.

I am way better shooting (at 25 meters I usually average at least 8,5 or 9 in tournaments, including rapid fire, and at least 7 at 50m), but these are SOLDIERS firing UNDER FIRE, not sharpshooters firing in a competition

In real life, try running 100 yard dash and thenshoot from a 25 yard line. Good chance you will not even hit the target at all.

At close range (even as an LMG), I'll usually switch to pistol (BEF or ArFr), because I have more control over the firing. Lying down and firing a pistol can give Very good results.

This isn't unrealistic to expect given that the majority of soldiers during the Blitz aren't pistol experts. Shooting a pistol is far harder than people realize. I have seen people miss their target by a rulers length at no more than 7 yards.

Except that you are looking as though you trialled this with the Axis SMG LOL rather than the luger as stated in the screen shot

The dispersal on the bofors seems excessive, & at the ranges were talking about that = a miss by a large margin. Perhaps you could do a similar test at 1K on a tgt PS ensure you use the 40mm axis bofors not an 88 :D J/K Doc thanks 4 info

Doc wrote :- "It was my last clip " So your'e saying had to use all the clips in the luger load to even hit the tgt ..that IS inaccurate hehe J/K

as a real soldier thats been deployed, including pistols: rifles are more accurate for two basic reasons, the barrels are longer and the weapon locks into your shoulder.
