Hi, everyone! It’s been a long journey but were getting close to completing the Squad Challenge. This weekend we finally got finish round II and are able to start round III the final round of the Squad Challenge.

I’ve been having some health issues and was not able to attend this and the 2 Squads, 101st and 7th AST had to run the Event alone and I was not able to be there to Record the event and make a movie of it like all the other event rounds.

AAR from Hick the Co of 7th AST:

On Sunday October 25 the 7th Allied Strike Team and 101st Airborne faced off in Round 2 of the Squad Challenge.

The first match had the 7th setting up to ambush the 101st along the route from Unkel to Lohmar. The match began at 14:51 Eastern Time when 14 members of the 7th AST lifted off from Mendig Airfield in a lumbering Ju-52 Troop Transport aircraft. At the same time, a convoy of two German 251 Half-Tracks rolled out of the Unkel Army Base heading north along the road with several infantrymen hunkered down inside.

The 7th deployed 2 Ambush teams along the road and a third team jumped into Lohmar to set up a trap at the West Army base. Ambush Team 1 set-up in the second wooded area on the route and lay in wait on either side of the road. They then sent a lone scout south along the road to report the expected convoy’s location and strength. The Second team set up farther north on the far side of a small hill in the road. The Army base team landed safely in town and proceeded to dodge AI Machine gun emplacements to take up positions in the warehouses inside the Army base.

Having safely deployed its troops, the Ju-52 dodged the flak at Lohmar and began low-altitude reconnaissance along the route. The enemy convoy was spotted approximately halfway between the first and second set of curves on the road. The convoy was fragmented with one Halftrack several Kilometers ahead of the second. Both began to fire at the low-flying aircraft in an attempt to blind the ambush team.

The first halftrack drove through the first ambush team before being engaged. It took several hits including one shot into the engine. It continued north along the road towards the second ambush location. The second 251 was then engaged by the first team and eliminated. Meanwhile, the second ambush team lay in wait, but after considerable time had failed to establish contact with the opposition force. Unbeknownst to the members of the 7th, the halftrack carrying the 101st’s commander had been disabled by the shot to the engine and was stalled out at the crest of a hill just north of the first ambush site. The members of the 101st were forced to complete the journey on foot. At 15:57 the OpFor was sighted and engaged by the second ambush team, and their commander, Sport20, was eliminated by a well-placed shot from 7th AST member Gridiron.

The roles were switched for the second match of the round, and after considerable on-the-fly planning, began at 16:21. The members of the 7th pulled out of town with a convoy of four 251’s, 3 loaded with infantry and 1 slightly ahead serving as a scout car. The 101st lifted off in a c-47 from Mendig with several Airborne Infantry to set-up ambush points. The First team dropped along the route in between the two s-curves and the second attempted to drop on the town. While the first team deployed safely, the second team didn’t fair so well, losing 2 troops and the Dakota to the heavy Flak over town. A third member was killed on the ground by an enemy Machine-gun tower, leaving 1 member to set-up an ambush along the road.

The Scout vehicle encountered 2 ambushes about 500m apart on the road, taking heavy fire from both before being disabled. The trailing 251 of the main convoy group was also eliminated by these ambush teams but was able to deploy its infantry to counter, allowing the two remaining 251’s to continue towards Lohmar. The ride was uneventful until just south of town when the lead 251 was hit by machine gun fire. The convoy’s remaining ground forces deployed to head through town on foot and clear the buildings, while the lead 251 headed for the West Army Base and the remaining half-track, Commander safely inside, headed through town to set-up and wait on the north side, The clearing forces worked their way carefully through the myriad of buildings in Lohmar, systematically clearing the town and then the buildings inside the Army Base itself. One enemy machine-gunner was encountered in the southern part of town and eliminated. The call went out the Commander’s 251 to roll in to the Army Base, and upon reaching the entrance ran in to the wall, knocking the Commander, Hick, out of the vehicle and momentarily making him think he was shot. He regained his bearings though, realized what had happened, and proceeded to run in to the bunker on foot, cursing the poor driving of his former chauffeur.

The Score for the day ended up 2 points for the 7th AST and 0 points for the 101st. Both sides fought well and had a blast. Unfortunately, only limited footage exists of the event so a video or photos may not be possible.

Sincerely,
Hick
7th AST
