FROM THE DESK OF THE AXIS COMMANDER IN CHIEF: !S Axis Forces, For the entirety of this campaign you have fought with a characteristic zeal and determination that I have seen frequently from you when faced with long odds and a desperate situation. As long as you can hold on to that zeal for victory and truly believe that success is always possible then the Axis side can never be broken. The forge of adversity makes us all stronger when we use it to out advantage. AAR of the Week: MAP OIC AAR Written: July 13, 2010 at 2:00 AM CST MAP OIC Shift: 11:30 PM (estimated) – 1:30 AM CST

The map didn’t move much and I only moved a single brigade, so this should be pretty short. When I took the map, our three AOs were on Unkel, Helchteren, and Hurtgenwald. Unkel was dead so it was removed and kept for a spare. Duren and Kerpen were our DOs. The Hurtgenwald attack was keeping the heat off of Duren. Kerpen was starting to get hot, so the FB was busted and an AO was placed on Euskirchen. We were down to two AOs (the enemy removed their AO at Duren at this time), so the dead AO at Helchteren was pulled for this. This would allow for Kerpen to get off of the frontline if it was successful. If a capture wasn’t possible, at least it might take the heat off of Kerpen. The plan was to do a full assault with ground units, FJ, and LW, but immediately FB defense became an issue. The attack appeared to start falling apart almost immediately but the AO had already been placed, so we decided to make the best of it. I assured everyone that as long as one FB still stood, a single MS spawning troops could still make something happen and that even the smallest actions in one area could easily affect other areas of the map. Low and behold, less than ten soldiers made the Euskirchen AO light up like a Christmas tree when a depot was capped. Soon the Kerpen spawn was captured and then the FB was made Axis again. The FJ was even able to drop some paratroopers. While the town could not be captured, it still caused the EWS to go double heavy and Kerpen went completely silent of enemy activity, which was the entire point of the AO. Maastricht was liberated once before, but the DO was never removed, and went to double light EWS. Once Euskirchen went super hot with enemy activity, I noticed that they were heavily defending both Hurtgenwald AND Euskirchen and could only manage to get light activity at Maastricht. And they were overpopulation…!
During this entire time, the only thing they managed to do was softcap Ouddorp. At the time it occurred, we were in heavy defense mode and were only able to transition to attack mode after it was lost.
I was a bit confused at first as to what our new AO plans might be, but as usual, with the help of a few officers, we were able to come up with a great plan.
I learned today that checking the MOTD is a very basic and VERY important thing. While I had checked it once before, I failed to read it correctly. When MAP OIC was passed on to me, I was not aware that Hotfink had been made MAP XO, and I asked that the MAP XO position be given to Schoner and updated in the MOTD. While in my opinion, it’s quite possible to have two MAP XOs for training purposes, it was wrong of me to misread the MOTD and make it look as though Hotfink had been removed from his position. I have apologized to him in game, but would like to do so again. I’m sorry, Hotfink, and will be sure to pay more attention not only next time, but every time in the future. In light of this, I would like to remind EVERYONE to utilize the MOTD and be sure to read it correctly.
I also learned about the importance of passing on information at the same time that MAP OIC is passed on. While it’s possible for every map officer to check supply, study the map, develop plans, etc., it’s much easier when a new MAP OIC is given information relating to the current situation. Things like supply levels, brigade movements, recent attacks, enemy performance, our performance, plans in progress, plans for the future, etc., go a long way in making the transtion between map officers go more smoothly.
Everyone did a great job out there today and it was great to see the Allies be in an overpopulation situation on heavy defense and only be able to bring light EWS to a single AO even though they had two available. It was a perfect example of how having an amazing defense with one smart AO can lead to a situation where the enemy is instead on the defense at TWO of our smart AOs without the ability to stage a single effective attack.
