AAR - Epic Bomber Night

If you weren't on last night, you really missed out. Not since the days of Hawkeye5's weekly bomber flight have I seen so many players come together for one bombing mission. I kid you not, gentlemen, the mission spawn list reflected not less that 23 Havocs (several of which were multi-crewed), 3 Hurricane 2Cs, and a smattering of fighter escorts when we lifted from England.

The target wasn't an FB nor a town, but the swath of land stretching between Dunkerque and the German FB to the east. Who led the flight? I can't remember the player's name and I'm sorry for that. We bombed from the edge of the city to the FB in one sweeping pass, killing every moving thing betwix the two. Glorious, I tell you, absolutely glorious to see every square foot of that area covered in bomb explosions!

Once wasn't enough, however. A second flight with equal numbers formed out of Calais to target the northwestern section of Dunkerque to include the docks. The results were just as impressive the second time.

A third flight of Hurricane 2Cs was formed for one last go at an FB. I'll just say that the FB was very much suppressed with little opposition.

AND IT DOESN'T END THERE!

While blasting the aforementioned FB to a soup of steaming earth, blood, and bomb fragments, a call came out across the air channel, "Thirty He-111s and escorts spotted in sector XXX northwest bound!" No way. The Germans wanted a piece of the fun and they brought it!

I wasn't able to get back home and rearmed before most of the first wave had dissipated, but I was certainly there for the second. Ryke, another old VFA-25 guy, charged ahead of my slower P-40F (all that was available) from Calais eastbound in his Spit IXC. "Oh, sweet mother of God," was all that I heard from Ryke. I soon enough saw for myself the utterly sweet vision Ryke was enjoying.

The sky was soon was filled with gray circles to become 110s. The Lufties had brought the piggies out to play, and play we all did. I was just so damned excited to be involved in a great air battle that I lost all sense of myself as a combat pilot. In short order, the piggies climbed upon my chest and were thumping me to the ground. I died without a kill, but was grinning from ear to ear.

For the Lufties who returned the favor, my wholehearted thanks, really. To the Allied pilots to participate, I was honored to be amongst you.

Thank you for what I'm sure will remain one of my most memorable WWIIOL night. S!

I was guarding the docks in Dunk when the bombers went overhead. The sound was amazing and the sight of all those birds made me blink more than once. I sent a WOW, did you see that? onto chat and soon that was joined by at least 30 more WOWs.

Ha, I'm sorry I missed that. Heard a lot about it on side chat but was busy stalking enemy tanks with an atg. That is what the air war is supposed to be like.
