From Drkpatch in the Barracks: "Have you ever considered moving to a "slot" type mission spawning system? What I mean is, rather than having a mission be a total free-for-all, where you can spawn anything in the pool that your rank allows you to, have a finite number of "slots" or roles in each mission. To take it a step further, I'd suggest also having a finite number of missions allowed in each brigade, and have different mission types, such as inf defense, inf attack, inf mortar, armor recon, armor attack, anti-tank, etc" KILLER: Yes we have thought about it.As well we have also thought about several other different ways to present missions and battles from removing despawning and moving mission creation inside the game, where mission are formed and joined without ever going back to the UI like we do today, going all the way to set piece battles where all participants from both sides line up for slots and the battle is opened when everyone is there. Then there are issues like voice chat integration, with a voice channel per mission, which would be unusable with too many people in missions and everyone talking over each other. We have to think about all issues not only current but future in what we would like to implement. We would like to change how battles are initiated, how missions are formed, how people and groups of people are scored for missions, ability for a group on a mission to change objectives or even relocate to a new battle as a group, how to make group play more effective and simpler to do, and how do this in ways that works with game systems and will help when it comes time to integrate things like voice chat with groups being appropriately sized for voice to be effective etc. Slots as a concept has been tossed around, but anything like that has to fit in as a part of a much larger system and plans for that system in the big picture. DOC: Yeah we have. We’ve even designed a few versions of how these could work. It does require we redo a whole bunch of other stuff from the guts out as it can’t just “drop in” to the current code so it won’t be something we can tackle immediately.

GOPHUR: Not to mention it is a terrible idea for anything other than a set piece battle such as the old SET fights where this system was used to great success.

I, for one, would love to see something like this added to the game, as it's something I've been requesting for nine years now. I believe that the way that battles/missions currently play out is a major weakness of the game design.
Also, I disagree with Gophur regarding his comment about this sort of thing only working for things like SET (disclosure: I am a former leader of SET). Incorporating it into the mechanics of the campaign would be challenging, but doable.
